Setup Text-Message Based MFA
Overview
When registering multi-factor authentication (MFA) through Microsoft, Microsoft natively guides users through registering with their proprietary authentication application, Microsoft Authenticator. This sometimes makes it more challenging for users who would prefer to set up text-message-based authentication to successfully navigate through Microsoft's MFA setup wizard.
This guide is intended for users who would like to set up SMS-based authentication for their Microsoft account rather than use an authenticator.
Step-by-Step
1. When you receive your prompt to register multifactor authentication, it may show up as "More information required" when you attempt to access a resource in our tenant. Ensure the email address at the top looks correct, then select "Next" to proceed.
2. Microsoft will automatically urge you toward the Microsoft Authenticator. For SMS-based authentication, please select "I want to set up a different method" at the bottom left.
3. In the popup, select Phone as your authentication method. Then, select Confirm.
4. Enter your phone number in the input field then select "Next".
5. You will receive a text message verification code shortly. When it arrives, enter the 6-digit code in the input field as shown below. After doing so, the button for "Next" will become clickable. Select "Next".
6. Select "Next" to proceed.
7. Select "Done" to finish.
Conclusion
Using the above steps, you will have set up multi-factor authentication for accessing HMA's tenant. If you run into any issues in setting up your multifactor authentication as shown above, please reach out to HMA IT Support for assistance.
